Case Study – Boarding Up Arched Hardwood Doors After Vandalism at a House in Wrexham
The landlord of a house in Wrexham called Quirks Property Maintenance Ltd after the glazed doors at the property had been vandalised. Nobody had tried to get in — the glass had been struck repeatedly and cracked through, but it was still in the frames. We attended the same day.
What we found
These were not standard doors. A pair of arched hardwood double doors and a matching single door, each glazed in tall pointed panes under a curved head — the kind of doors made for the house rather than bought off the shelf. Both had been hit in several places, leaving star-shaped fractures across the panes and cracks running between them.
Cracked glass that is still in the frame is a particular problem. It looks as though it is holding, but it has no strength left: the next knock, a slammed door, or a change in temperature can drop it out in pieces. The doors could not be used and the glass could not be left as it was.
Boarding up
The doors were boarded from the inside, with OSB sheets cut to follow the arch of each leaf and fixed with timber battens across the face, screwed into the door stiles and rails. Boarding each leaf separately rather than sheeting over the whole opening meant the doors could still be opened and locked as normal while they were boarded.
Cutting a board to an arched head takes longer than a square opening, and it is worth the time. A board that follows the frame closes the opening properly and sits tight to the timber, rather than leaving gaps at the shoulders of the arch.
Outcome
Both sets of doors were left boarded, secure and usable the same day, with the cracked glass held safely behind the boards until the landlord arranges its replacement.
