Emergency door repairs — Wirral
Emergency door repairs across the Wirral: forced doors, doors hanging off a hinge, snapped locks and doors that have dropped and will not shut. We aim to make the door safe and secure on the first attendance wherever conditions allow, and quote the permanent repair in writing, with a 24-hour call-out for the jobs that cannot wait until morning.
We cover the peninsula from Birkenhead and Wallasey across to Hoylake and West Kirby and down to Heswall and Bebington. Send photographs of the door, the hinges and the lock on WhatsApp and we will tell you what we can see and what happens next.

In short: Across the Wirral, we aim to make a damaged door safe and secure on the first attendance wherever conditions allow, with the permanent repair quoted in writing. Timber, uPVC, composite and aluminium shopfront doors, fire and exit doors, frames, hinges, closers, locks and cylinders.
A forced or damaged door can leave a property insecure. Put personal safety first. If you think a break-in is still in progress, or you are not sure the property is empty, call 999 and do not go in. If the damage came with a fire, a gas smell, a live cable exposed in the frame, or part of the building has moved so the door no longer fits its opening, ring the emergency services before you ring anyone else.
Only once you are sure it is safe to be there:
A door hanging on one hinge can come off the frame altogether.
If it is not safe to stay, leave and tell us that when you contact us.
Send them to us on WhatsApp. Do not go back into a property to take photographs.
Where required, we can provide photographs, reports and quotations to support an insurance claim.
What we attend
The call-outs fall into a handful of patterns, and the fix is usually one of these:
Doors we do not attend: roller shutters, automatic and sliding shopfront doors, bifold and sliding patio doors, and garage doors. If that is what you have, we will say so when you send the photograph.

WIRRAL — COMMERCIAL BUILDING
A pair of glazed doors at a commercial building in Wirral had magnetic locks that would not hold. The customer sent us pictures on WhatsApp when they reported it. A lock plate had come loose: it was re-fixed, the doors were re-aligned to meet the locks, and nothing was replaced.
The doors are a pair of glazed leaves in dark metal frames, meeting in the middle, with magnetic locks at the head. A magnetic lock only holds when the plate fixed to the door sits flat against the magnet as the door closes. If the plate shifts, or the door does, the lock has nothing to grip.
The customer’s pictures, sent on WhatsApp when they reported it, show the two leaves no longer meeting properly at the top, with daylight between them.

Once we were there, the problem turned out to be a lock plate that had come loose. With the plate no longer held firm, the magnet had nothing solid to hold on to.
The plate was re-fixed, and the doors were re-aligned so that they meet the locks as they close. Nothing was replaced.
Before we left, the doors were checked closing and the locks tested holding.
The still below is from our own video of the doors working after the repair.

This write-up covers the pair of doors and their locks: a loose lock plate re-fixed and the doors re-aligned to meet the locks, then checked closing and holding. The lock units themselves, and anything else at the building, are outside it. Door work like this sits within our commercial property maintenance service.

How an emergency door job runs
Every emergency door job runs the same way, whatever the door and whoever owns it.

A worn uPVC door hinge: the screws give up before the door does.
1. Made safe as conditions allow
The door is taken off its hinges if it is about to fall, or supported and re-hung if it can be, and the opening is closed and secured for the night.
2. The cause found
We look at why it failed: a corroded hinge, a snapped lock cylinder, a frame split by a kick, a door that has dropped because the fixings behind the hinge have pulled.
3. Temporary protection where it is needed
Where a door or its glass cannot be made secure that visit, we board the opening and arrange glazing or a replacement door once the property is secure. We aim to leave nothing open overnight; where access, safety, the structure around the opening or specialist parts prevent it, we tell you on the visit and say what the next step is.
4. A written quotation for the permanent repair
Where the first-visit repair is temporary, the quotation says so plainly, and says what a lasting repair or a new doorset would involve.
Our vans carry the common door spares — hinges, cylinders, handles and closers — so where the fault is one of those, the first visit is usually the repair as well. Where a part has to be ordered, the door or opening is made as secure as conditions allow in the meantime.
Emergency call-outs are subject to availability, weather, safe access, location and the nature of the damage. We will give you an honest indication of attendance when you call.
Local conditions
The Wirral’s coast makes a difference to doors. In Wallasey, New Brighton, Hoylake and West Kirby, salt-laden air off the Mersey and the Irish Sea can corrode external ironmongery — hinges, letter plates, cylinders and the screws holding them — and we have seen exactly that on coastal jobs. Add wind-driven rain on north- and west-facing elevations and a timber door can swell, stick and pull at its fixings.
Birkenhead, Oxton, Wallasey and Rock Ferry have a good deal of Victorian and Edwardian terraced and villa housing with large timber doors in softwood frames, while Bebington, Moreton, Greasby and Upton are mostly interwar semis and post-war estates where uPVC doors and their multipoint locks may now be well past their first life. On the exposed Dee-side elevations around Heswall and West Kirby, the weather rather than the hardware is often what a door is up against.
None of that is a diagnosis. The age of a property, where it sits and a photograph tell us where to look; what the door needs is settled when we see it.

Straight answer on each door
Not every damaged door needs replacing, and we will tell you which yours is once we have seen it. A dropped timber door is usually re-hung on new fixings. A snapped uPVC lock is a cylinder or gearbox change. A split frame can often be cut out and spliced. The cases that point to a new doorset are a frame that has rotted behind the hinges, a composite door with a cracked slab, or hardware so corroded that a new hinge will not hold in the old timber for long.
Where the door is beyond economical repair, we aim to make the opening secure on the visit, say so in the quotation and quote the replacement separately. We do not describe any repair as permanent where it is not.

Treated differently
A fire door or a fire exit door that has been damaged is treated differently. The door, frame, hinges, closer and seals work together as a set, so a quick fix that would be fine on a back door can leave a fire door non-compliant. Our operatives are FireQual and BWF fire door trained, and the director holds the FireQual Level 3 Fire Door Inspector qualification, so we can tell you whether the door can be repaired to standard or should be replaced as a certificated doorset. On a repair that means fire-rated hinges, closer and ironmongery, intumescent strips and smoke seals, lipping and threshold, and the gaps brought back within tolerance — not just the part that broke. Where the leaf is split or warped, the gaps cannot be closed, or the door has been cut for glazing or vents without certification, it is replaced rather than repaired, and we say so. Send us a photograph of the door and we will come back with what we can see and a written quotation. If the door will not shut or lock tonight, WhatsApp is quicker than the form.
One contractor
Most door call-outs are a door job. Some are not: the frame has moved because the wall above it has, the timber has rotted because the wall behind it is wet, or the glass is gone as well as the lock. Quirks takes all of it on under one roof, so you are not chasing a joiner, a glazier and a builder separately.

Forced, dropped, jammed or unlocking doors made safe and re-hung. Timber, uPVC, composite and manual aluminium shopfront doors; frames, hinges, closers, floor springs, locks and cylinders.

Where a door or its glass cannot be secured on the visit, the opening is boarded on the visit wherever access and conditions allow, and glazing or a replacement arranged once the property is secure.

Glazing and window repairsThe questions we’re asked most
Salt in the air. The coastal side of the Wirral corrodes external ironmongery faster than inland, so hinges, cylinders and the screws holding them fail early. When we re-hang a door on the coast we use stainless or heavier-gauge hardware where the door and frame allow, and say so on the quotation.
The whole peninsula — Birkenhead, Wallasey and Bebington on the Mersey side, Hoylake, West Kirby and Heswall on the Dee side, and Moreton, Greasby and Upton in between. Postcodes CH41 to CH49 and CH60 to CH63.
Usually. A heavy timber door drops when the hinge screws lose their grip in the frame, not because the door has failed. It is re-hung on new fixings or heavier hinges and re-aligned rather than planed down, which only hides the fault and comes back.
Yes. Shared entrance doors on the Wirral’s converted villas are a common call. We will need to know who manages the building for the quotation, but we aim to make the door secure on the visit regardless of who pays.
Wherever conditions allow, yes — that is how most emergency jobs run. The first visit is about getting the door shut, locked and safe. Where a lasting repair needs parts or a new doorset, we aim to make the door or the opening secure that visit and quote the permanent work in writing. The quotation says plainly which parts of the first visit were temporary.
It depends on what has failed and what the door is. Re-hanging a dropped timber door on new fixings is a different job from replacing a uPVC multipoint lock, and both are a long way from a new composite doorset where the frame has rotted. The things that move the figure are the type of door and frame, whether the repair can be done on the first visit or needs parts ordering, whether the opening has to be boarded in the meantime, whether it is a fire door that must be repaired to standard, access, and any making good to the frame and decoration. Most jobs we can price from photographs — send yours on WhatsApp or by email and we’ll come back with a written quotation.
Where required, we can provide photographs, reports and quotations to support an insurance claim. Keep the crime reference number if the police attended, and photograph the damage before anything is moved.

Emergency door repairs — send us photographs
Written quotation before any permanent repair — what is temporary is said in writing.
WhatsApp or email gets the quickest reply. We come back to you as soon as we can.
Photographs may not be enough to tell us everything about a door and its frame, and a site visit may still be needed.
