Why guttering fails around Flintshire
Flintshire runs from the Dee estuary up to the Clwydian foothills, and the weather is not the same at both ends. Along the estuary — Flint, Bagillt, Holywell, Connah’s Quay, Shotton — rain often arrives sideways on a westerly, and long gutter runs on exposed elevations take the brunt. Up towards Mold, Northop, Halkyn and Gwernaffield the rainfall is heavier and the trees are closer, so blockages from leaf fall and moss are the more common call.
The Deeside estates built between the wars and after — Connah’s Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Garden City, Mancot — are mostly semis and terraces where the original cast iron has often been replaced with plastic at some point; where it has not, the back edge of the gutter is where it rusts through, out of sight.
The older stone terraces, chapels, halls and schools in Mold, Flint, Holywell and the villages can still carry cast iron and hopper heads, sometimes on high eaves that need more than a ladder. The newer estates around Hawarden, Ewloe, Buckley, Broughton and Mynydd Isa are uPVC almost throughout, and there the usual faults are joints and brackets rather than the material.
None of that is a diagnosis. Age, location and a photograph tell us where to look; the run itself tells us what is wrong.

Recent emergency gutter project: a storm-damaged downpipe on a community hall
A community hall dating from the 1850s, built in coursed stone, called us out after a storm had taken a downpipe off the wall.
Off the wall and doing nothing
The old pipe — painted plastic rather than the cast iron the building would once have carried — had come away from its fixings and was no longer taking water from the gutter above it.
On a stone building the fixings matter. The old ones had let go and could not simply be pushed back in.

We removed the failed pipe and its fixings, made new fixings into the stone, and cleared and checked the gutter run it serves while we were up there. Nothing on the gutter itself needed renewing.
Back in service
A new black uPVC downpipe, fixed to the stone and discharging as before. The gutter run was cleared and checked on the same visit.
The hall’s rainwater goods are working again; the rest of the building was not part of this call-out.

How we find the cause before we recommend anything
A gutter that overflows at one corner can have its problem twenty feet away. We look at the whole run, not just the wet bit — outlets, joints, brackets, the fall along the length, the fascia behind it, and the downpipes and where they discharge. Photographs first, then a first view from the pictures, then the run end to end on site, then a plain explanation and a written quotation for anything beyond making safe. The first visit is about stopping the immediate problem: securing or taking down a section that is hanging, clearing the blockage causing the overflow, refixing a downpipe clip, or diverting water away from the wall while a proper repair is arranged. If requested and agreed, we can provide photographs and a written description of the visible damage and the work carried out; your insurer decides how any claim is handled.
- Usually same-visit, where conditions allow — clearing, resealing a joint, refixing brackets or clips, refitting a downpipe shoe.
- Usually a return visit — replacing lengths or a whole run, correcting the fall, anything that needs ordered parts or access equipment.
- Another trade — a roof leak above the gutter, fascias and soffits that need renewing, or damp already inside the building — we say so and point you to the right page.
- Never on the first visit — work at height in high wind or heavy rain, or from an unsafe ladder position. We will not carry out work at height where wind, heavy rain or other conditions make the work unsafe.
- Before we leave — where there is a water supply, we run water through the gutter and downpipe so you can see it draining, rather than take our word for it.

Repair or replace — we tell you which and why
Most emergency calls end in a repair. Blocked outlets and runs, leaking unions and corners, loose brackets, downpipe clips and shoes, a single cracked length, a run that has dropped at one point — all repairable. Replacement is usually the better answer when several joints are failing along the same run, the material is brittle with age, the fall is wrong along the whole length, the fascia will not hold a fixing, or the same fault keeps coming back. We work with cast iron and uPVC, and we will say when a like-for-like repair is right and when a modern replacement makes more sense. Cast iron that is sound can also be painted or treated afterwards, as planned work, to extend its life.

Emergency call-outs, including out of hours, are subject to availability. Attendance is prioritised according to the immediate risk, location, weather conditions, access and team availability.
- Risk first — a hanging section over a footpath or water coming through a ceiling comes before an overflow onto a lawn.
- Weather — we do not work at height in high wind or heavy rain.
- Height and access — single-storey and most two-storey eaves are reached from ladders; higher eaves, anything over a conservatory or glass roof, and work over a public footpath may need a tower or scaffold and more time.
- Where the team is — one crew may be on a flood or a roof when you call. We tell you honestly when we can attend rather than promise a time we cannot keep.

- If nothing is broken and the gutters need clearing before winter, that is routine gutter cleaning — ask us and we will arrange it as planned work rather than an emergency.
