If anyone is at risk, that comes first

In short: In Chester and Ellesmere Port, we aim to make a damaged door safe and secure on the first attendance wherever conditions allow, with the permanent repair quoted in writing. Timber, uPVC, composite and aluminium shopfront doors, fire and exit doors, frames, hinges, closers, locks and cylinders, in homes, lets and shop premises.

A forced or damaged door can leave a property insecure. Put personal safety first. If you think a break-in is still in progress, or you are not sure the property is empty, call 999 and do not go in. If the damage came with a fire, a gas smell, a live cable exposed in the frame, or part of the building has moved so the door no longer fits its opening, ring the emergency services before you ring anyone else.

Only once you are sure it is safe to be there:

Do not force a jammed door open or shut.

A door hanging on one hinge can come off the frame altogether.

If the door will not lock and it is safe to stay, keep someone in the property, or move anything valuable out of sight of the opening.

If it is not safe to stay, leave and tell us that when you contact us.

If you can do it safely, take photographs: the whole door from inside and out, the hinges, the lock and the frame where the damage is.

Send them to us on WhatsApp. Do not go back into a property to take photographs.

If the police have been, ask for the crime reference number.

Where required, we can provide photographs, reports and quotations to support an insurance claim.

What we attend

The doors we attend, and what usually needs doing

The call-outs fall into a handful of patterns, and the fix is usually one of these:

  • Forced or kicked doors — the frame split at the keep or the hinges, the door itself often sound. The frame is spliced or renewed and the door re-hung on new fixings; the lock is replaced where the cylinder has been snapped.
  • Doors hanging on one hinge — the hinge has corroded through or its screws have pulled out of soft timber. The door is supported, re-hung on new or heavier hinges, and the keep re-cut so it latches cleanly again.
  • Dropped doors that will not shut — the door has sagged in the frame and binds on the head or the floor. Re-hung, re-aligned and the hardware re-set rather than planed down, which only hides the fault.
  • Locks that will not turn — a snapped cylinder, a failed multipoint gearbox on a uPVC or composite door, or a mortice lock that has given up. The lock, cylinder or gearbox is replaced and the keeps adjusted.
  • Broken glass in the door — the opening is boarded on the visit and the glazing arranged once the property is secure, rather than a pane fitted in the dark.
  • Fire doors and exit doors — hinges, closers, seals, panic bars and exit hardware, and the leaf itself, repaired to standard or the doorset replaced.
  • Locked out — depending on the door and lock type we can usually gain entry; where the only way in would damage the door or frame we tell you before we start, and we repair what we have to open.
  • Shop and office doors — manual aluminium shopfront doors that have dropped or will not lock, failed overhead closers and floor springs, worn handles and pivots, dealt with so the premises can open and close securely.

Doors we do not attend: roller shutters, automatic and sliding shopfront doors, bifold and sliding patio doors, and garage doors. If that is what you have, we will say so when you send the photograph.

CHESTER — OFFICE BUILDING

Recent emergency door repair project

The glazed entrance door of an office building on a business park in Chester would not close. The customer emailed us a photograph of it when they reported the fault. The door had dropped on its hinges and was catching as it closed, and nothing was replaced to put it right: the existing hinges were eased and adjusted.

BEFORE

A door that would not shut

The door is a tall glazed entrance door in a blue-framed screen, with a keypad entry panel beside it. An entrance door that will not close cannot be locked, so a fault like this is a security problem before it is anything else.

The photograph below is the customer’s own, emailed to us when they reported the fault.

View from inside an office entrance through a tall blue-framed glazed door with a round pull plate, towards a car park and office buildings
The customer’s photograph of the entrance door, sent with the report that it would not close.
DURING

Dropped on its hinges

On site, the cause was the door itself. It had dropped on its hinges and was catching as it closed. A heavy glazed door does not have to drop far before it starts catching.

Nothing was replaced. The existing hinges were eased and adjusted to bring the door back into line, and it was then checked closing and locking before we came away.

AFTER

The same hinges, back in line

The two photographs below were taken after the adjustment: the foot of the door from inside, shut, with the hinges in view, and the entrance from outside.

Adjusting is not always the answer. A hinge that has corroded through, or a door that has been forced, is a different job. Here the door had dropped, and the hinges it already had were enough to put it right.

This write-up covers one door and one fault: a dropped entrance door brought back into line by easing and adjusting its existing hinges, then checked closing and locking. Nothing else at the building is part of it. For the wider service behind call-outs like this one, see our reactive maintenance page.

How an emergency door job runs

What happens on the call-out

Every emergency door job runs the same way, whatever the door and whoever owns it.

A failed bottom hinge on a uPVC door.

1. Made safe as conditions allow

The door is taken off its hinges if it is about to fall, or supported and re-hung if it can be, and the opening is closed and secured for the night.

2. The cause found

We look at why it failed: a corroded hinge, a snapped lock cylinder, a frame split by a kick, a door that has dropped because the fixings behind the hinge have pulled.

3. Temporary protection where it is needed

Where a door or its glass cannot be made secure that visit, we board the opening and arrange glazing or a replacement door once the property is secure. We aim to leave nothing open overnight; where access, safety, the structure around the opening or specialist parts prevent it, we tell you on the visit and say what the next step is.

4. A written quotation for the permanent repair

Where the first-visit repair is temporary, the quotation says so plainly, and says what a lasting repair or a new doorset would involve.

Our vans carry the common door spares — hinges, cylinders, handles and closers — so where the fault is one of those, the first visit is usually the repair as well. Where a part has to be ordered, the door or opening is made as secure as conditions allow in the meantime.

Emergency call-outs are subject to availability, weather, safe access, location and the nature of the damage. We will give you an honest indication of attendance when you call.

Local conditions

Why doors fail in Chester and Ellesmere Port

Much of Chester’s older housing — Hoole, Handbridge, the Garden Quarter, Boughton — is Victorian and Edwardian terracing, and many houses still have original or replica timber front doors in softwood frames. Those doors are heavy, the frames have often been painted over soft spots for decades, and in our experience the hinge screws pull out of the timber long before the door itself fails. We have re-hung and repaired original timber doors in these streets: a dropped or forced door is usually re-hung and the frame spliced rather than swapped for a uPVC unit, and in a conservation area a like-for-like timber repair is normally the sensible route.

Upton, Blacon, Lache, Vicars Cross and Great Boughton are mostly post-war and later, where uPVC and composite doors are common and the failures we see are multipoint locks, snapped cylinders and hinges that have dropped. Ellesmere Port’s older terraces and later estates can show the same two patterns. Shop and commercial entrance doors are a regular source of call-outs for us, and in the city centre a closer or a hinge that gives up at opening time is the usual reason.

None of that is a diagnosis. The age of a property, where it sits and a photograph tell us where to look; what the door needs is settled when we see it.

Straight answer on each door

Repair the door, or replace it?

Not every damaged door needs replacing, and we will tell you which yours is once we have seen it. A dropped timber door is usually re-hung on new fixings. A snapped uPVC lock is a cylinder or gearbox change. A split frame can often be cut out and spliced. The cases that point to a new doorset are a frame that has rotted behind the hinges, a composite door with a cracked slab, or hardware so corroded that a new hinge will not hold in the old timber for long.

Where the door is beyond economical repair, we aim to make the opening secure on the visit, say so in the quotation and quote the replacement separately. We do not describe any repair as permanent where it is not.

Treated differently

Fire doors and fire exit doors

A fire door or a fire exit door that has been damaged is treated differently. The door, frame, hinges, closer and seals work together as a set, so a quick fix that would be fine on a back door can leave a fire door non-compliant. Our operatives are FireQual and BWF fire door trained, and the director holds the FireQual Level 3 Fire Door Inspector qualification, so we can tell you whether the door can be repaired to standard or should be replaced as a certificated doorset. On a repair that means fire-rated hinges, closer and ironmongery, intumescent strips and smoke seals, lipping and threshold, and the gaps brought back within tolerance — not just the part that broke. Where the leaf is split or warped, the gaps cannot be closed, or the door has been cut for glazing or vents without certification, it is replaced rather than repaired, and we say so. One contractor

One contractor for the door, the opening and whatever caused it

Most door call-outs are a door job. Some are not: the frame has moved because the wall above it has, the timber has rotted because the wall behind it is wet, or the glass is gone as well as the lock. Quirks takes all of it on under one roof, so you are not chasing a joiner, a glazier and a builder separately.

    The questions we’re asked most

Questions people ask about emergency door repairs in Chester

My front door in Hoole or Handbridge is an original timber door — will you replace it with uPVC?

Not unless you ask us to. In Chester’s older streets, and particularly in a conservation area, a dropped or forced timber door is re-hung on new fixings and the frame spliced where it has split. Where the door itself is sound that is usually the right repair, and it keeps the look of the house.

Do you cover Ellesmere Port from Chester?

Yes. Ellesmere Port, Whitby, Little Sutton and Great Sutton (CH65 and CH66) are covered from this page, on the same run as the Chester call-outs.

Can you attend a shop or office door in Chester city centre?

Yes. A failed closer, a snapped cylinder or a door that has dropped and will not lock on a commercial premises is treated as an emergency because the building cannot be left. We aim to make it secure on the visit and quote the permanent repair in writing, including manual aluminium shopfront doors, overhead closers and floor springs.

I’m a landlord with a tenant locked out, or unable to lock the door, in Blacon or Upton — what do you need from me?

A photograph of the door and lock from the tenant, the postcode, and who the quotation is to go to. Whether we can gain entry depends on the door and lock type, and we will say from the photograph. We attend, make the property as secure as conditions allow and send the written quotation to you or your agent.

Can you make the door secure tonight and do the proper repair later?

Wherever conditions allow, yes — that is how most emergency jobs run. The first visit is about getting the door shut, locked and safe. Where a lasting repair needs parts or a new doorset, we aim to make the door or the opening secure that visit and quote the permanent work in writing. The quotation says plainly which parts of the first visit were temporary.

How much do emergency door repairs cost in Chester?

It depends on what has failed and what the door is. Re-hanging a dropped timber door on new fixings is a different job from replacing a uPVC multipoint lock, and both are a long way from a new composite doorset where the frame has rotted. The things that move the figure are the type of door and frame, whether the repair can be done on the first visit or needs parts ordering, whether the opening has to be boarded in the meantime, whether it is a fire door that must be repaired to standard, access, and any making good to the frame and decoration. Most jobs we can price from photographs — send yours on WhatsApp or by email and we’ll come back with a written quotation.

Will you give me what I need for an insurance claim?

Where required, we can provide photographs, reports and quotations to support an insurance claim. Keep the crime reference number if the police attended, and photograph the damage before anything is moved.
